Watashi to Kowareta Kyuuketsuki / 私とこわれた吸血鬼 – Shoujo Manga First Impressions

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of vampire manga, and I was an instant fan of this one! It’s rather distinct from all of the other vampire manga I’ve been reading recently, with this story being very dark in tone. While it’s technically a shoujo manga, be prepared for some more adult themes!

A quick recap of chapter 1

Itsuki is a girl who has lived a very unfortunate life until now. As a child, her parents were neglectful, leaving her to almost starve on numerous occasions. Her one saving grace was meeting a boy in her neighbourhood, You, who brought her food and companionship.

After learning that You was going to move away, Itsuki had to step up, and find a way to survive on her own. And she wasn’t just fighting for her own survival, as not long later, her parents completely abandoned bother her and her two younger siblings.

Due to her having to take care of two high school students, Itsuki is never not working. She’s putting her all into trying to give them a better life than she’s been given, but her siblings aren’t exactly grateful. After bailing her younger brother out of jail one day, he tells her off and leaves her on her own in the dark.. Where she promptly gets kidnapped by the cause of his arrest.

This kidnapping proves to be near-fatal, and by luck, her body falls onto the property of her childhood saviour, You. As she is in and out of consciousness, Itsuki see a strange looking figure crawl its way to her… and then blacks out.

When she wakes up, Itsuki is met with something of a brutal scene. Her saviour, You, did technically move away.. But only to the basement. Where he was kept in chains. It turns out he is a vampire, and he was locked away for the safety of his own family. Due to being a vampire, his body works in a different way from humans, and he reveals he is able to heal wounds – ultimately saving Itsuki.

But, You is quite different from how he was when they were children. Is it just due to the fact that he’s been chained up in the basement for the past 10 years? Or perhaps is there something even darker going on?

My Thoughts on the Volume

I really enjoyed this introductory chapter! I think it was appropriately dark for a vampire manga, and it touched on some tones often unseen in shoujo manga.

I do find the female lead’s character to be the slightest bit unbelievable in that she’s incredibly cheerful for the majority of the chapter. I understand that she’s doing her best to live a good life, but if I’m going to nitpick, that’s the only piece I found out of place.

I really enjoyed You’s character, as there is clearly some deep vampiric lore going on. I’m very excited to see how he further develops from here!

I’m also really hoping that we get to see some revenge, or even penance from Itsuki’s two siblings. Literally they’re both absolutely terrible in their own special way, and I really need some kind of resolution with them.
