I feel like this is one of the more important words to know when it comes to shoujo vocabulary! While it can also mean “to accompany”, like “will you accompany me to the store?”, it also means “to date”! Often times when someone asks another out, they will use this word!

Example Sentences

First, let’s try a simple sentence: “I want a boyfriend, so please date me!”. Personally, I find this to be an absolutely terrible way of asking someone out, but sadly not entirely unrealistic.

First, let’s make a word bank:

English	Hiragana / Katakana	Kanji	Romaji (reading)
Boyfriend	かれし	彼氏	Kareshi
To want	ほしい	欲しい	Hoshii
So / because	から	から	Kara
Me	わたし	私	Watashi
To date	つきあう	付き合う	Tsukiau
Please	ください	ください	Kudasai

Now, let’s write it out in romaji!:

“Kareshi ga hoshii kara watashi to tsukiatte kudasai”

Let’s change it to hiragana:

“かれし　が　ほしい　から　わたし　と　つきあって　ください”

And lastly, let’s add in the kanji:

“彼氏　が　欲しい　から　私　と　付き合って　ください”

What if we want to say… “Takuma confessed to me, so we started dating!” This sentence introduces a word that we will be seeing quite often in conjunction with “to date”, “to confess”!

First up, we need a word bank!

To confess	こくはく	告白	Kokuhaku
To do (me the favour of…)	して くれる	して くれる	Shite kureru
So / because	から	から	Kara
To date	つきあう	付き合う	Tsukiau

Now that we know all of the relevant words, let’s put them together in a sentence!

First, in romaji only:

” Takuma ga kokuhaku shite kureta kara, tsukiau koto ni narimashita “

Now using hiragana:

”たくま　が　こくはく　して くれた　から、つきあう　こと　に　なりました。”

Now let’s add in the kanji:

”たくま　が　告白　して くれた　から、付き合う　こと　に　なりました。”

Often time in Japanese, like you can see in this sentence, we omit the subject! We only do this when it’s very clear – in this case we’re leaving out “Watashi”.

Let’s try one more sentence! What if we want to say… “I have some errands to run…Would you tag along?“? This one has more of a “I want some company!” rather than a “I want you to go on a date with me” connotation.

Now using hiragana:

”ちょっと　ようじ　が　ありますが、つきあって　くれませんか。”

Now let’s add in the kanji:

”ちょっと　用事　が　ありますが、付き合ってくれませんか
