Let’s take a look at how to use this word in a sentence!
Example Sentences
First, let’s look at what the boy in our example picture is saying! First, let’s make a word bank!
| English | Hiragana | Kanji | Romaji (reading) |
| Hair | かみ | 髪 | Kami |
| To suit | にあう | 似合う | Niau |
| To think | おもう | 思う | Omou |
Now, let’s write out what he said in romaji!:
“Kami! ni, niatteru to omou yo?”
Let’s change it to hiragana:
”かみ!に、にあってる と おもう よ?”
And lastly, let’s add in the kanji:
”髪!に、似合ってる と 思う よ?”
We can translate this sentence using our word bank at the top:
Your hair! I-I think it suits you..?
**Because of the sentence structure being different, I placed the stutter maker at the relevant location, rather than the relevant word in the translation**
What if we want to say… “Those glasses suit you!”!? First up, we of course need a word bank!
| English | Hiragana/ Katakana | Kanji | Romaji (reading) |
| Those | その | その | Sono |
| Glasses | メガネ | メガネ | Megane |
| To suit | にあう | 似合う | Niau |
Now that we know all of the relevant words, let’s put them together in a sentence!
First, in romaji only:
Sono megane wa niatteimasu yo
Now using hiragana:
その メガネ は にあっています よ
Now let’s add in the kanji:
その メガネ は 似合っています よ
Let’s try one more sentence! What if we want to say… “Green clothes suit him“? Let’s get the word bank started!
| English | Hiragana | Kanji | Romaji (reading) |
| He | かれ | 彼 | Kare |
| Green | みどり | 緑 | Midori |
| Clothes | ふく | 服 | Fuku |
| To suit | にあう | 似合う | Niau |
Alright, let’s make some sentences!
First, using romaji only:
Kare wa midori fuku ga niatteimasu
Now using hiragana:
かれ は みどり ふく が にあっています
Now let’s add in the kanji:
彼 は 緑 服 が 似合っています
And that’s niau! Have you ever heard this word before?
