3 Romance Manga Recommendations for Beginners!

So, you’re new to collecting manga and don’t know where to start? I’ve got you covered!

Before We Start…

All of this manga that I’m recommending have official English publications, are ongoing, and are fantastic~!

They are also all published in the Dessert manga magazine. Not sure what a manga magazine is? Read my guide to magazines here!

Fall in Love you False Angels / 恋せよまやかし天使ども

This manga won Kodansha’s “best shoujo manga” award, so if my opinion can’t convince you, perhaps Kodansha’s can!

Fall in Love you False Angels’ biggest strength is it’s characters. Their design is fantastic, their personalities are entertaining on their own, and they have such a good repertoire when together you just want to keep reading on.

This is a somewhat slow burn story. While we do get a confession at the end of volume 1, the other character doesn’t realize their feelings until the end of volume 4.

There are currently 4 volumes out in Japanese, and 2 in English. You can check out a digital sample in English from Kodansha’s site here!

A Sign of Affection / 指先と恋々

A Sign of Affection is probably the most popular series on this list, and for good reason! This is a very sweet romance about two university students. There is a little bit of an age/maturity gap, but it’s portrayed in a very tasteful manner.

I would say the biggest strength of this series is the overall tone of acceptance. As out female lead is deaf, she’s had to learn to figure out the world around her differently from others. The male lead accepts her almost instantly, and provides a kind, warm energy throughout the series.

There are currently 12 volumes out in Japanese, and 11 in English. You can check out a digital sample from Kodansha’s website here!

Love, That’s an Understatement / ひかえめに言っても、これは愛

This is actually my favourite Dessert manga, and I strongly believe that it deserves more recognition! While there have been quite a few issues in terms of its English publication, you can read it digitally without any problems.

This manga’s biggest strength, in my opinion, is the overall story. We get to watch as both Zen and Lisa grow individually, and as a couple. The side characters are also rather interesting, and there is always a bigger event going on.

Even the villains in the story aren’t completely evil, and we get to witness this as we watch how everyone interacts with one another.

There are 6 volumes published in Japanese, and technically 5 published digitally in English. You can check out the English version on Kodansha’s website here.
