What happens in volume 1?

Maaya is a high school student who becomes a little scary when she develops a crush on someone. She has been interested in a boy from her cram school for the past little while, and despite never having talked to him before, she builds up the courage to confess her feelings to him. He, of course, turns her down. To add insult to injury, he posts about the situation on his Twitter, fully expressing how creeped out he was.

Maaya, devastated at having her first time confessing go so horribly, publicly announces that she’s going to give up on love while she thinks she’s alone in the library.

She’s not alone though, and this awkward declaration is what gets her talking to one of the most popular boys in her grade, Chigira.

Meeting Chigichigi

Chigira, perhaps due to having multiple younger sisters, is very adept at reading the room when it comes to Maaya. He makes the suggestion of pretending to have a crush on him, just until her feelings for her old crush die down. Maaya eventually agrees, and Chigira tells her he’ll let her do whatever she likes doing when she has a crush.

Maaya promises Chigira that she’ll only use him as a pretend crush until she gets over her last crush. As he’s an unobtainable flower, he won’t have to worry about her actually developing feelings, she promises him.

Maaya’s Stalker List

Little does Chigira know, Maaya is an absolutely insane person when it comes to having a crush. She creates a list of things that she feels like she must do when she has a crush, ranging from “liking everything he likes” to “counting every time I can find him”. Chigira isn’t really phased at this, and wishes her luck on her missions.

Through Maaya’s stalker activity, she and Chigira do slowly become closer and closer! To the point that the two go out on little “dates” come the second half of the volume.

Maddies Ratings

The characters

Rating: 3 out of 5.

While Maaya is rather childish, and Chigira is a little bit expressionless, I do like them together!

Maaya is a well-written character, in my opinion! I think that while the trope of lovesick teenager is a bit overdone in media, it is realistic! Some girls really do lose all reason and turn into stalkers when they catch feelings, so it was really fun for me to follow Maaya as she went crazy. She does have some communication skills, but her awkwardness does at times hinder her ability to convey what she’s thinking. This doesn’t lead to any misunderstandings in this volume, but I can see it happening in the future.

Chigira is an interesting character! We are shown bits and pieces of why he’s extra kind to Maaya, and I can’t wait to learn more about his backstory. Though he tends to be rather expressionless, his actions speak for him more than anything else, so I was never confused about what he was thinking. I do wonder if his popularity is only due to his athleticism and good looks, as it doesn’t seem like anyone else at school knows much about his personality…

Romance

Rating: 2 out of 5.

There is bits and pieces of romance in this volume, but there is more focus on building character relationships! I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it if there was romance right from the first page, so I am enjoying the pacing of the romance so far.

Storytelling

Rating: 3 out of 5.

While I don’t think the storytelling is anything spectacular, I am enjoying it! We follow Maaya 90% of the time, and we get to follow her along as she stalks Chigira. There are some more trope-y parts here and there, but there was nothing that actually bothered me.
