Fans of teen romance will enjoy this series! This one isn’t a shoujo manga, but a youth manga! That means that it isn’t really tailored to boys or girls but rather fans of the romance. genre.

The Art

I found the art in this series to be so refreshing! This volume is a little bit larger than a typical Japanese manga, and so the art was also larger than normal.

To me, this art feels very clean and crisp! While I do love the fluff and sparkles that shoujo manga tend to bring, I also enjoyed the stripped down style that this manga brought. A change of pace is always good.

Why I like this manga

I found this manga to be very sweet! While we typically saw things through Chika’s eyes, after about halfway through the volume we we’re also granted Waya’s perspective on things.

This manga focuses on the story of two people who are juuuuust about to date, and we get our fill of the awkwardness that comes with that. Both Chika and Waya are teenagers, and as many teenagers are, they are a little bit awkward when they’re alone together.

The way their relationship dynamics change when at school vs when not at school also adds quite a bit of emotion to the story, as again, caring about what their classmates think is an incredibly teenager thing to do.

There is also a secondary couple in this series, with their own bits of drama here and there. I found the secondary couple to be very interesting, and I’m really hoping that there is more of a focus on them in the second volume.

Themes and tropes:

  • Popular x socially awkward
  • Friendship

Is there drama?

There was one instance of drama that I actually had to skip through because it stressed me out. I was able to trail back and read it later, however it hit me hard in the moment and I couldn’t handle it.

I am a baby when it comes to drama and big feelings! If you are a fan of stories with ups and downs, you will enjoy this scene. If you’re like me, the story is worth pushing through this scene.

Maddies Ratings

Romance

Rating: 2 out of 5.

I only give the romance this low of a score because this volume focuses on building a relationship between Chika and Waya. While there really isn’t any romance in this volume, we know that their relationship has a good foundation! This will be important context for when there is (hopefully) romance.

World building

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Because of the type of manga this is, I don’t feel like realistic world building is all that difficult. It is a romance manga that takes place in modern day Japan.

Characters

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I really enjoyed learning more about both Chika and Waya!

Chika is a very popular girl in school, who is able befriend just about anyone. While she may seem rather one-dimensional at first, we soon learn that she is a rather complex character. She has a lot of feelings: she gets jealous, she gets hurt, she gets embarrassed… She is a well-written character.

Waya is a rather socially awkward boy in Chika’s class. Due to being teased in his younger years, he seems to have developed a bit of a complex when it comes to speaking to those around him. To be more exact, he’s overly conscious of being seen interacting with others. Throughout the volume we get to see him come more and more out of his shell, and it was very rewarding to see how far he progressed by the end!

Is it entertaining?

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I found this volume to be entertaining! While there isn’t any action or anything, the story is very realistic and engaging. It really feels like you’re watching a drama set in a modern-day Japanese high school.

If you need out-of-this-world events to happen to enjoy a story, I would skip this one. This manga is heavily based on reality. It’s a good manga to wind down with after a crazy day.
