Watashi no Koi no Hajimekata / わたしの恋のはじめかた (2) – Manga Review

Volume 2 of Watashi no Koi no Hajimekata was pure fluff. No stress, no misunderstandings, just fluff.

The Art

I find the art in this series to be so beautiful, and it fits both the characters personalities, and the story that’s being told perfectly.

Why I like this manga

Both characters are just so cute! In this volume, we got to see Chisaki come to terms with the fact that she does have feelings for Reo. She’s actively trying to be a good girlfriend to him, and it’s not hard to root for her. While there are a few misunderstandings here and there, they end in one to two panels, and they all are caused by her clumsy-but-good intentions.

We also learn more about Reo’s backstory, finally we get to see why he liked Chisaki so much from the start! The story telling when we were shown their first interaction was fantastic, and it was brought in at such a good point in the volume! I really do find this series to have great storytelling. While the plot isn’t all that crazy, I really appreciate how carefully the author depicts the relationship between Chisaki and Reo.

Now that the two are officially dating in this volume, we are treated to a lot of fluff, and just overall cute scenes between them.

Themes and tropes found in this volume that I generally enjoy:

  • awkward romance
  • acceptance
  • jealous boyfriend
  • possessive boyfriend

Is there drama? (we’re generally not a fan of drama)

There is nothing that I would consider drama in this volume!

Maddies Ratings

Romance

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This volume gets an a++ in terms of romance. Chisaki and Reo are just so cute together, and the romance feels very realistic. As the two have only just begun dating, they’re a little bit awkward around each other, but they still clearly really like each other… I find the writing to be fantastic when it comes to depicting slightly awkward teen romance.

World building

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Because of the type of manga this is, I don’t feel like realistic world building is all that difficult. It is a dramatic, romance manga, that takes place in modern day Japan.

Characters

Rating: 5 out of 5.

In my last review I was complaining that we weren’t shown exactly why Reo liked Chisaki so much from the beginning – and thankfully we were shown exactly that in this volume!

I think both characters are showing signs of growth in this volume, and they are by no means static. I’m excited to read on and see where they grow from here!

Is it entertaining?

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This volume was very entertaining for me even though there really wasn’t much of a plot. The romance is the plot. I would say that there were really only two events in this volume, and they were just the setting for various romantic things to happen.

Personally I really enjoyed this, but you may not find it entertaining if you don’t really enjoy romance.
