Setting

Volume 1 mostly takes place at our main characters’ high school, however we do also get to see a bit of their town as well.

What happens in volume 1?

Volume 1 starts off with our main character, Momose in a bit of a predicament: her school requires all students to be in a club, and currently, she isn’t registered with any. Not to worry though, as she is quickly introduced to the honours student Ichikura, who is the only member of the “helping people club”. Momose quickly agrees to join the club, though exactly what she’ll be doing is still a little bit unclear.

Ichikura, the honours student?

When we’re introduced to Momose, we’re also introduced to her aversion towards yankee students – she used to be bullied by these students in her middle school. That’s all in the past though, and she feels at ease when with Ichikura, the honours student… That is, until his true personality is revealed – he is a “former” yankee.

While it’s true that now he’s really working hard to be a good student, he can’t hide from his past self. In certain situations, his “yankee-ness” tends to slip out – i.e. when there’s a fight.

While Momose should find him scary, he’s actually strangely kind to her, and she can’t bring herself to feel scared. They both recognize that they wanted to change for the better upon entering high school – Momose becoming more outgoing and going so far as to dying her hair, and Ichikura focusing on his studies – and they find solace in each other.

Prone to fighting…

Although Ichikura states that he has given up his yankee ways, he does get into several fights throughout this volume. While sometimes the fights come to him, he doesn’t exactly avoid confrontation either.

Momose, although having grown fond of Ichikura, really is uncomfortable with all of this fighting. So, they make a pinky promise that from here on out, Ichikura will no longer fight.

Ichikura is different from other yankee!

Ichikura and Momose grow closer and closer throughout the volume, and end up going shopping for new clothes after Ichikura is invited to go bowling with his classmates. As all of his personal clothes are from his yankee days, his wardrobe is in desperate need of an update.

A little while later on… Momose realizes her grades are slipping, and so she asks Ichikura if he can’t tutor her. As he’s an honours student, of course his grades are good, and it turns out he’s also a pretty good tutor! After she passes her test with flying colours, she rushes to let him know… Where he asks her out!

…and that’s where the volume ends!

Maddie’s Ratings

Fluffiness

Rating: 1 out of 5.

While there isn’t really much fluff in this volume, there are a few cute moments between the two of them scattered throughout the volume!

Romance

Rating: 2 out of 5.

I bumped up the rating a little bit as they start dating at the end of this volume! As soon as the two meet at the beginning of the story, their chemistry is clearly seen. They understand each others circumstances right away, and are cute together – even as friends.

Story-telling

Rating: 4 out of 5.

While this is just a high school romance manga, it is very very fun! I love yankee romance manga, and I find the idea of a “former” yankee, who still very much acts like a yankee sometimes, to be really fun. I enjoy watching their adventures, and I’m looking forward to where the story will go next~
