World’s End Blue Bird – Manga series introduction

**This is an 18+ BL manga**

Tokyo, in the near future… The city is ruled by a wizard. Rei is an odd-job handyman who lives in Twilight Town, one of Tokyo’s impoverished slums. One day, he meets Guan, a spectacularly pretty man. Guan is covered in tattoos, and carries himself with the arrogance of a highborn. Their meeting leads to a night together…and becomes pivotal for the future of Tokyo. A fantastic, magical love story about overcoming fate about a hardliner handyman and an excessively pretty leader.

Why I like this manga

The first thing that drew me to this series was the insanely beautiful cover art. While I do think the art on the cover is nicer than the art inside the manga, the inside art is still far above average.

This is a rather dystopian manga, and it feels rather unique! I really like how politics are mixed into the story, with the “wizard” being at the top of the food chain. I also find the way the author was able to mix in some Greek mythology in was very intriguing. I really wasn’t expecting the manga to go where it went, so it really had me in a grip the whole time.

The main characters

There are two main characters to be found:

Ray

Worlds end blue bird - ray

Ray is a handyman who lives in the slums of this world, and he clearly stands out. The women who live inside the slums acknowledge him as a beautiful force to be reckoned with, as he’ll do just about anything for money. Those who live outside the slums recognize him as well, as on top of being beautiful, he’s incredibly smart.

He is very different from the average person living in the slums, as thanks to his adoptive father, he has the ability to read, and think critically.

Currently, he is doing his best to secretly save up money so that he can leave Tokyo.

Guang

Worlds end blue bird - guang

Guang is the son of the former wizard, and has just become the new wizard. His current position is incredibly complicated.

As someone in the wizard family, he lived his entire life in the towers looking over the slums, quite literally a whole other world. After becoming the new wizard, due to internal strife within the tower, he decides to take a trip to the slums where he meets Ray.

Guang wants to make the world a better place, but that isn’t all that easy to do. He sees a good political partner in Ray, and is doing all that he can to bring him over to his side.

Is there drama? / trigger warning

There is some:

  • sadness
  • violence
  • NSFW scenes

There is no:

  • love triangles
  • cheating

Art Sneak Peek

Maddies Ratings

Romance

Rating: 2 out of 5.

I didn’t really vibe with the romance in this manga. It starts off 100% physically only, and usually that kind of romance throws me off of a series. HOWEVER! I will say that I did enjoy watching them slowly grow emotionally connected throughout.

Art

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The art really is beautiful!

Is it entertaining?

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I was very entertained throughout this manga! It has a lot of twists and turns, and I was never able to guess where the story was going to go.
