Setting
Volume 4 mostly takes place within Colette’s village, as we learn more about her, and the inhabitants of the village.
What happens in volume 4?
Volume 4 starts off showing us a little glimpse of just how well Colette and Hades are getting along, with him willingly letting her check on his health, and him hand delivering her letters sent from the heavens.
Colette, the midwife?
When two injured women appear in Colette’s workspace, her busier days become all the busier. The two women, both midwives, had injured themselves to the point that they couldn’t do much at all for the foreseeable future – and there was a patient with an approaching due date.
After thinking for a moment, Colette is asked to take over just this once, as there is no one else who can help.
From here, we learn that while Colette does work as a doctor, or an apothecary, she has absolutely no training when it comes to midwifery. In this universe, because doctors are always being exposed to a variety of diseases, it’s thought that there is a high chance that they will accidently infect newborns, and so, midwives are indispensable.
Despite this, and not being able to turn away someone in need, Colette accepts, and begins her training.
A mother to be
While the patient at first didn’t trust Colette, through her hard work and kind words, they were slowly able to get on the same page.
Colette, putting all of her effort into trying to understand how to best get through to her patient, ends up self-reflecting on her own childhood, and mother, quite a bit.
Colette, who’s entire village was decimated by illness, can really only remember little bits and pieces of her mother, and realizing this begins taking a toll on her.
The more time she spends with her patient, the more depressed she becomes, thinking of her own deceased mother. So, she makes her way to the underworld to try and cheer herself up.
Hades cheer team
While the skeletons working under Hades chastise her a little bit upon her decent, she quickly makes her way to him as he’s walking his dogs.
He notices somethings wrong with her almost instantly, and quickly gives her support. She further confides in him, and they have a sweet moment, where he tells her she is always welcome in the underworld whenever she feels lost.
Date with Hades!
After successfully helping her patient give birth, Colette goes to give the good news to Hades. This is where she is met with unexpected news: He’s planning on venturing into the human world to buy presents for his attendants.
He dawns a hooded robe, and they head off to go shopping together! While Colette understands the hooded robe makes him look very suspicious, as Colette herself is widely known as a doctor, she tells herself that there will surely be no problems.
An unexpected patient in the market
Suddenly, a man collapses in the middle of the market where they were shopping. Colette, being a doctor before all else, leaves Hades side for a little while to get him help.
She treats him as kindly as she would any other patient, and returns to Hades side.
The patient isn’t far behind her though, as he runs after her, and proposes to her right in front of Hades. Before anyone can do anything, they are all transported to the strange patients family home.
A man who won’t accept “no”
As they enter the family home, the strange man explains to Colette that she is the first woman to ever treat him as a non-useless person, and so, he has fallen in love with her.
She is, of course, rather burdened with this. So much so that she apologizes to Hades for getting him involved with all of this.
While she tries to turn him down, both the man, and his family, all push away her rejection, insisting that she at least stay and think things over.
When she is forced into being alone with this man, she does her best to kindly, and completely turn him down. He, instead of acting like a rational human, grabs her, and tells her that he isn’t going to let her leave.
This is where Hades pops in, forcing himself between the two of them.
Rather than realizing he just did something unforgivable, the man instead questions exactly who Hades is. To which, he replies that he is Colette’s escort.
…and that’s where the volume ends!
didn’t I say a lot happens!!
Maddie’s Ratings
Fluffiness
The fluffiness really ramped up in this volume!! Both the very first and very last scenes show how close Colette and Hades have gotten, and we get really nice little spotlights throughout the volume.
Romance
While there still isn’t any actual romance in this volume, it’s clear that it’s a slow-burn! The romance is coming, I can feel it.
Story-telling
This volume, again, kept me hooked right from the start! I liked that we were given the change of pace of learning about Colette’s backstory while following her try out a new sub-profession.
