Sugar Apple Fairy Tale – Manga series introduction

This mangas history

This manga actually has a somewhat special backstory, so I wanted to highlight it for a moment! This story was first created as a light novel, spanning 20 whole volumes.

From there, a manga spin-off with art by Alto Yukimura was published with a total of 2 volumes. A second manga spin-off was created by Yozora no Udon, and this is the version that we have in English! That isn’t where it stops though, as there was a third manga spin-off by Konosagi, though this is a digital only retelling.

The author, and their other manga

  • This story was written by Miri Mikawa!

As this manga was adapted from a light novel, the original author is not a manga author (mangaka), but a novel author! So, I won’t be talking about their other works here – they’re all Japanese untranslated novels.

How many volumes? Is there an English Release?

  • There are currently 4 volumes published for English audiences to enjoy! You can check out all of their translated work here!

Why I like this manga

I love a good fae romance story. Challe, the male lead of this story, as an aloof, handsome character, and is literally everything that I look for in a fantasy ML.

I love the world that this manga is set in, and I believe the author does a very good job of depicting classism in a fantasy setting. While our FL claims to despise the mistreatment of the fairies, she still does end up purchasing one to help her on her journey.

I feel like there are a lot of little things that add a sort of realism to this fantastical story – not every “good” character is only good, for example.

The main characters

There are two main characters to be found:

Anne

Anne is the daughter of a renowned sugar sculptor. In this fantastical world, being a sugar sculptor is a highly praised job, as only the best of the best can achieve this status. As she was brought up in this environment, Anne is determined to follow in her mother’s footsteps.

Anne is a kind girl, who does her best to treat fairies as nicely as she can. Although she is rather weak, she doesn’t hesitate to help those who are even weaker than she is. This kindness is probably her best attribute, as it helps her win the hearts of those around her.

Challe

Challe is a dark and mysterious warrior fairy. We first meet him at a market for purchasing fairies, and he insists that Anne buys him.

He claims to hate humans, and distrusts everyone around him, including Anne. He has a history with humans, but it isn’t revealed exactly what he went through for a good majority of the story.

He claims to be driven only to ensure his own survival, but even then, he slowly begins to help Anne just for the sake of helping her.

Maddies Ratings

Romance

Rating: 3 out of 5.

While I really do like the romance in this series, I feel like it’s a bit too short for it to really grow to its potential. I think the light novels do a better job depecting the love story.

Art

Rating: 3 out of 5.

While I do like the art, it isn’t anything extraordinary.

Is it entertaining?

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I do really enjoy this series! While I do think the light novel is better than the manga, I do still think the manga is worth giving a read.
