Love, Thats an Understatement (2) : Manga Recap

Summary of Events

Volume 2 starts off at Zen’s house—it turns out he lives in a house attached to a temple! That night, we also get Lisa and Zen’s first phone call. Lisa, afraid of the ongoing thunderstorm, accidentally calls Zen. From there, we get to see more of Zen’s supportive side, and also a bit of his sister’s.

Cut to the next chapter, and we have Lisa tutoring everyone again—an ongoing theme of this manga. We also learn a little more about Zen’s four friends and their relationships with each other. Lisa also seems to grow closer with his friends, going as far as making personalized study guides for each of them.

We then cut to Lisa’s apartment, where Zen visits a sick Lisa.

The characters we see more of in this volume

Toji

Toji, one of Zen’s friends, has unfounded major problems with Lisa. I think he’s just afraid to loose his friend groups “leader”, but that doesn’t give him the excuse to do some of the things he did in this volume..

Zen

Zen is stil going strong in volume 2. He does show some character growth, and all of his motivations seem to be tailored around Lisa. He does still treat her a little bit poorly (in my opinion) at times, but hopefully he grows out of it quickly.

Lisa

Lisa really hasn’t changed much in this volume! She does go out of her way (something she wouldn’t normally do) to help Zen’s friends, but besides that I find her to be the same as she was in volume 1 – which isn’t a bad thing! I think her and Zen’s dynamic is still very cute, with her being more shy, and him being more pushy.

Maddie’s ratings

Art

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The author of this manga has really prefected the use of shoujo manga backgrounds, imo. They really add a bit of “umph” to the romance scenes.

Characters

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I think the characters feel really realistic! Zen being late to picking Lisa up because he had to help his friend in a fight, while a little bit outrageous, did feel like something that a teenage boy would do.

Romance

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Literally Zen and Lisa are just too cute together.

Plot

Rating: 3 out of 5.

There really isn’t much of a plot (yet?). Lisa studiest hard to get in a good school, Zen gets into a lot of fights with his school rival. It really doesn’t get all that much deeper than that, but i’m enjoying the manga nevertheless.
